GrECI Research Meeting IV: ‘Greek Sources in the Reformation and the Confessional Debates’ – Besançon 2025

The Marie and Louis Pasteur University will host the fourth Research Meeting of the GrECI project from May 21 to 23, 2025. The event will take place at the MSHE (1, Claude Nodier Street, Besançon) and will be accessible both online and in person.
The meeting will focus on the role and significance of Greek classical and patristic writings in the confessional debates of the Reformation. By delving into the use of classical and patristic sources in the work of early modern scholars such as Luther, Erasmus, Melanchthon, Zwingli and others, the meeting will shed light on how Greek intellectual traditions influenced religious controversies of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Call for Papers: GrECI Concluding Conference – Nicosia 2025

The GrECI consortium is delighted to invite papers for the project’s concluding conference, which will take place in Nicosia, Cyprus.
The thematic core of the conference will be the cultural heritage of Ancient Greece and the various ways it became a shared cultural archive for Europeans, as well as the ways in which it was used, disseminated, and functioned as a form of self-identification during the early modern period. Topics on book history and Greek (production, circulation), the role of ancient Greek in vernacular cultures, the use of Greek in religious controversies, or engagement with the material culture of ancient Greece are welcome as well as proposals on topics such as the use of Greek in the early modern classroom, early modern women’s engagement with Greek culture, Greek and the study of law, and Catholic vs. Protestant receptions of Greek. We are interested, lastly, in papers that consider developments in research in the last five years, as well as papers that showcase diverse approaches and methods, including the use of digital humanities tools.
Outreach Meeting II: ‘An Ancient Heritage for Today’s Europe: Engaging Young Europeans through Communicating the Past’ – Besançon 2024

GrECI will hold its second outreach meeting in Besançon, on the 17th of October, on the topic: An Ancient Heritage for Today’s Europe, Engaging Young Europeans through Communicating the Past. The event is a direct continuation of the last Summer School in Cyprus (10-11 June 2024). Organised in close collaboration with the Maison de l’Europe of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, this event aspires to re-introduce the topic of the ancient heritage among young Europeans and ask them to reflect upon it. The contributors will problematise the role of Classics and History in national educational systems during the 19th and 20th century, while they will also highlight the role of Public History in creating notions of European identity.
The event is addressed to the wider public, educators and policy makers, students and pupils. The cultural and scientific diversity of the speakers offers a pluralistic perspective on this contemporary European theme.

‘GrECI Summer School’ (outreach and stakeholders meeting): The Teaching of Classics, Languages, and History in European National Curricula – Nicosia 2024

GrECI’s first outreach and stakeholder meeting will take place in Nicosia, on 10-11 June 2024 on the subject of ‘The Teaching of Classics, Languages and History in European National Curricula’. Representatives from a number of European countries will present an overview of the content of their national curriculum of these subjects; through the presentation and juxtaposition of these different perspectives, the meeting will address the extent to which curricula promote a European identity alongside the national identity.
The event is addressed to educators of all levels, relevant policy makers, as well as the interested public, who are invited to participate, consider the information about different curricula and discuss the implications that these have for the formation of national and/or European identity.

Public Lectures on ‘Classics and Classical Scholarship in Norway in the Age of National Independence’ – Oslo 2024

The two lectures will be open to the public.
Research Meeting II: ‘The Material Heritage of Ancient Greece in Early Modern Europe: New Approaches and Perspectives’ – Athens 2024

This workshop aims to explore early modern Hellenism from the perspective of its material culture in a broad sense. Our scope is not confined to the early modern receptions of the physical traces of ancient Greece such as its artefacts and landscapes. It also includes the ways in which the ancient Greek heritage more generally was incorporated in the material culture of early modern Europe through art, architecture, and in other areas of daily life such as dress and book culture.

As part of GrECI’s project WP4, which is dedicated to ECRs, the University of Franche-Comté organised the first “Network and Training” workshop (Besançon, 14-15 December 2023). The workshop considered European networks, career perspectives, funding opportunities for ECRs, as well as the issues of interdisciplinary research and impact in Humanities.

Research Meeting I: ‘Greek Books and Europe’s Common Culture’ – Nicosia 2023

This workshop addressed issues related to: the circulation of Greek books in different geographical (and cultural) areas, the production and dissemination of Greek books in a Latin or vernacular context, the activities of specific printers or publishers and how these relate to printing context or book use, as well as the specific uses of Greek books (as indicated by material or other evidence).

GrECI Kick-off Meeting – Nicosia 2023

The members of the project gathered in Nicosia to present the main content and aims of the project. The meeting focused the four main thematical foci of the project: history of the book, digital heritage studies, language and literature studies, and intellectual history (Reformation studies). It also presented the manner in which the project will be implemented (the Work Packages).
